Have you heard about HR 669? If you are in the exotic animal community, you likely have. This bill is to prevent the introduction and establishment of nonnative wildlife species that negatively impact the economy, environment, or other animal species’ or human health.

While this sounds like a good thing, as releasing captive animals into the environment can cause problems, it isn’t. It will negatively effect all of the exotic community – reptiles, birds, fish, small animals, etc.

If this bill is passed, it will ban the import/purchase/sale/trade/breeding of numerous exotic animals.

There is no word on what species will be on this list, and they would not decide until after the bill is passed.

Help stop the bill from passing, contact a represenative today!

This isn’t reptile news, but a lot of us with reptiles have some other pets. I know I personally like rats, which might be partially why I do not want a large snake. At least the frozen rats we feed to our snakes are humanely killed.

Here’s an article from CNN

These rats might be a nuisance, but they are using their instincts and doing what they do best, eating everything.

Take this quote ” The assault on the rats of 6,871-acre Rat Island could begin as early as next October. The plan — which involves the use of a blood thinner that will cause the rodents to bleed to death — still must be reviewed and sent out for public comment.”

They want to give the rats blood thinner, to make them bleed to death. Isn’t this painful and inhumane? I’d believe it is. If you were to bleed to death it would hurt, and you’d be miserable. We have laws against torturing humans in order to kill them, and even have laws for dogs and cats, why not rats, reptiles, and other animals? Just because they aren’t your typical household pet doesn’t know they don’t have the same rights as others do.

Say someone came in and decided to cook your pet rat in the oven. That’s torture, and wrong. You go to court about it, you might win the money for it being your property, but nothing else, because these are worthless animals in the governments eyes.

Now what gives us the right to kill these animals? They invaded the territory because someone let them jump ship 200 years ago, more power to them knowing how to do this. We as humans are destroying the environment, killing off endangered species, who are soon to be extinct. We are using up all the oil, destroying all the natural resources we have, and polluting the air. What are the rats doing? Eating seabirds, and things that go on the land. They think we are the smart ones, killing these animals to protect the wildlife. Kill them, but you will still be killing the wildlife every day, destroying it piece by piece, until eventually their is no ozone left to protect us from the sun rays, there is nothing left at all in this world because we as humans killed it all.

Think about it, because in the end, these rats aren’t doing anything wrong, it is we the people that have killed the Earth and are causing all these problems.
